A Thorough Overview of Co-location Hosting
December 23, 2009 at 12:36 pm

A co-located server is a web server that is stored at a facility that includes special security features such as dedicated internet connectivity, a secured server cage/rack, monitored electricity, and technical support. These “co-location” facilities provide the client with a secure environment to store their equipment and hardware. This option is seen as far more secure than storing a server in an office or warehouse, where there are threats such as fire, vandalism and theft. Co-location facilities offer many security features, including backup power generators, security cameras, smoke detectors/fire extinguishers, abundant connection feeds, and other services that ensure consistency and dependability, both of which are crucial for any virtual business.

Co-located Servers vs. Dedicated Servers

The term “co-location” refers to the act of storing a privately owned server at a corporately owned facility. In essence, this term is coined because the server is being hosted at one facility and administrated from another. With co-located hosting, you own all rights to your server and you are allowed to access it at any given time. There are no restrictions on what you can do with your server because you own it, you are simply storing it at a third-party facility. On the other hand, a dedicated server is provided by a web host and is only rented by the customer, not owned. Users of dedicated servers only have remote access to the server, which means the server can be customized according to  the clients preferences, however the user does not have physical access to the web server, as they are only renting it.

The Benefits of Co-location Hosting

Obviously, the security features offered by a co-location facility are very desirable. The servers are kept in rooms that are designed with server safety in mind with features that include 24 hour video surveillance and a fire-proof facility. The flexibility of co-location hosting is also very appealing, as  every aspect of the co-location hosting service is customizable to the user’s likings, and the user can upgrade their services at any time. Users also have access to the fastest bandwidths possible, and tremendous amounts of data storage. Combine these benefits with the fact that the servers receive maximum up time, access to regular remote maintenance, and maximum security, and it is easy to see why co-location hosting is optimal for online business owners. Since most maintenance and administration can be performed through remote access, users enjoy a decreased dependence on third-party support services. All of this amounts to more control of the hosting service in general, with greater independence and quality experienced by the end user.

Disadvantages of Co-location Hosting

While co-location hosting facilities are considered extremely safe, some people still do not trust their equipment with any third-party facility. Of course, servers cost thousands of dollars, and in some cases it is understandable to be a little protective over your equipment. Another disadvantage is that you will have to maintain, and upgrade the server yourself. All equipment used must be purchased by you, and you do not have the option of renting a server for a low monthly cost. This makes co-location hosting an expensive option that is usually only used by high-traffic, high income earning web sites. If you do not have the funds to cover all of the initial and long-term costs associated with co-location hosting, then you may want to consider a dedicated hosting service instead. While co-location hosting offers many advantages to the online business owner, it should be noted that these benefits come with added responsibility and cost for the user.

Targeting Specific Demographics With Domain Names
December 22, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Most people automatically assume that a .com or .net domain is the best way to get the most traffic and to reach their targeted audience. Of course, this is not necessarily false, as both of these domain extensions add a sense of credibility to your website. However, even though a .com or .net domain extension is generally optimal, there are some situations where using a region-specific domain extension would be more beneficial . Using region-specific domain extensions is especially useful when trying to target a particular demographic. For example, if your target audience is in Canada, then you may want to use a .ca domain. The following are several reasons why one would consider using region-specific domain extensions.

Easily Targeting a Specific Audience

As mentioned above, using a region specific domain will allow you to target a particular demographic or region. Using region-specific domain extensions will make it easier for you to offer products or services that are specifically targeted towards customers in a particular region. Doing this will increase your sales conversions, as your visitors will be more likely to be interested in your product.

Increasing Your Potential Customer’s Trust

Many people are more comfortable shopping with merchants that are local or at least within the country. It gives them the assurance that they will receive fast shipping, and personalized service. Of course, many people do not mind shopping globally, but there is a large group of people that are more willing to purchase goods or services from local merchants.

Enhancing Search Engine Optimization

In some cases a domain with a region-specific extension will receive a higher search engine ranking. One such case would be if someone from China is performing a search for: “web hosting company in china,” a site named webhostingcompanies.cn will often rank higher than a website with a .com extension.  There are also directories that people use to find certain products or services in their area. Your site will appear in these directories if you have a domain extension that is specific to that region.

Maximizing Your Marketing

If you want to maximize the potential and outreach of your business, then you may want to consider registering a .com extension and a region specific domain.  Doing this will make your business viewable to international and national users.  Domain names are relatively inexpensive, yet they are an excellent opportunity to diversify your income stream. Making the right decision in regards to your domain name and extension is crucial, as it will represent your brand and your company online.

The Importance of Secure Web Hosting
December 21, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Virtually every known web hosting company in the industry places their efforts and advertising emphasis on one main aspect of web hosting- security. These web hosting companies have every reason to place added emphasis on security, as any website can be attacked by hackers. Just as the web hosting companies are doing everything they can to deter intruders, hackers are also putting forth every effort to find sensitive information such as credit card numbers, account numbers, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers and anything else they can benefit from.  To ensure the constant protection of this crucial data, proven security measures and constant monitoring must be practiced by the web hosting companies to ensure the safety of the end-users.

Why Hackers Target Web Hosting

The web hosting industry consists of thousands of individual companies that hosts hundreds of millions of websites around the world.  There are literally billions of dollars involved in this industry and hackers will employ any device they can to get some of it.  If you run a business website that sustains the lives of your family and others, then it is crucial that you place security above every other aspect of web hosting. Your web host ultimately will be responsible for maintaining the security of your website, so thorough scrutiny of the web hosts security practices is imperative when examining prospective hosting providers.

How Equipped are Hackers?

Hackers employ a wide variety of techniques and tools to try and infiltrate any loophole they can find.   Usually, a hacker will use a multitude of combined tools and techniques to compromise the security of a website and then take advantage of any information they can find.  Some will even go so far as to become your online “friend” to entice victims into doing certain tasks, such as visiting an infected website that will execute a malicious code on the hard drive of the infected computer. Most of the time they will gain access to a computer by getting the victim to download a file, such as a game or a mutli-media application. Once they have access to your computer’s hard drive, they can even use it as a “drone” and use your computer’s resources to carry out hidden hacking tasks for them. Some hackers can have thousands of “drones” at their disposal, making them a serious threat. One of the more serious tools hackers have is called a keylogger. Keyloggers have the ability to log every key pressed on one’s keyboard, thereby giving the hackers access to passwords and other information.

Security is the Top Priority

You don’t have to be an expert in Internet technology to keep your website safe, in fact you don’t need any experience in this field at all. However, your web host should employ countless experts and a twenty four hour security staff. It is your job to ensure that you are using a reliable hosting provider, and it is the responsibility of the hosting provider to keep your website safe. To ensure your website is safe, all you need to do is a little bit of background research on any potential web hosting companies. All web hosting companies have multiple user reviews available online, and generally speaking, any of the top 10 web hosting companies are a safe choice.

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Shared Web Hosting
December 18, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Choosing the right web hosting service is a crucial part of running an online business, because it will directly affect the productivity of your business. The first step in building an online business, once you have a registered and active domain, is to decide what type of web hosting you will be using. One of the most popular types of web hosting is shared hosting, as it is said to be a more appealing option than dedicated hosting. For this reason, it is imperative to conduct a thorough analysis of the benefits and disadvantages of shared web hosting.

The Price of Shared Web Hosting

Of course price is always at the top of the list when considering a new product or service. As a consumer, you would like to know that you are indeed going to be receiving your money’s worth. When it comes to price, shared hosting definitely carries the advantage. Customers receive discounted rates in comparison to other hosting options because only a minimal portion of the server is utilized by the client.

Since the hosting company does not need to provide a lot of server space, the price is therefore more affordable. Overall, shared hosting is definitely worth the money and should be considered as a viable option for any small business owner looking to run their own website.

The Features of Shared Hosting

Even though the price is lower, you still receive customer support, so you don’t have to worry about being “left in the dark” if you experience any technical difficulties. Since shared hosting companies know just how important customer satisfaction is in a highly competitive market, most companies offer a guarantee of quality assurance. Shared hosting also provides the user with access to features such as multiple e-mail addresses, and PHP assistance. It is also an excellent option for technical “newbies” because you do not need to have any experience with server management or hosting in general.

The Disadvantages of Shared Hosting

Even with all of the benefits shared hosting offers, the are some aspects of shared hosting that may be considered disadvantages by some consumers. The most significant disadvantage of shared hosting would have to be the reduced level of security. This elevated security risk stems from the fact that you will be sharing a server with other users.  Another problem with shared hosting is limited resources, since there are other people using the same server, you will like experience some restrictions. You may want to consider another option if your website has a high amount of traffic routinely.  Also with shared hosting you often do not have permission to install programs, since the server is maintained by another  company. However, since multiple servers are at your disposal, it may not be difficult to find the desired program or plugin for your website.

Making The Decision

After considering the advantages and disadvantages of shared hosting, many people base their decision upon their needs. For most individuals, shared hosting provides everything needed to run a website from home. However, if you are planning on building a very large website with high traffic and greater needs, then you may want to consider dedicated hosting, or even co-located hosting with your own private server.

Website Templates VS. Custom Designs
December 17, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Having a professional looking website is one of the best ways you can boost your companies sales.  Customers are reassured when they see you have made an investment in your business in the form of a good looking, user-friendly website. However, this doesn’t mean you have to invest a lot of money, or even a lot of time. Or do you? The answer to this question greatly depends upon what you are trying to accomplish with your website. When it comes to building a website, you really have two main options. You can use a pre-designed template, or you can have a custom design made.

Custom Designed Websites

If your business is already very successful and you have a brand name to uphold, then undoubtedly the best choice would be a custom designed website.  Building a custom website, and having access to freelance programmers will ensure that your site can be updated whenever there are important industry changes. These types of updates cannot be done with a preset template. A custom website will not only give your customers a more visually stimulating experience, but it will also allow them to enjoy unique interactive on-page features. Having a website designed to your needs will also make it easier for you to project the desired image for your business.  While customized websites also allow you to continuously make adjustments to your websites design, they also require a greater investment off two synonymous things; time and money.

Template-Based Websites

If you have a new business that is not yet established then you may want to consider a pre-made template for your website design. Also, if your website is going to serve a basic function, such as providing information on a certain topic, then a template would also be a good option. Of course the advantages of using a template are obvious, you will be saving time, money and effort. However there are a great deal of disadvantages as well. If you would like to customize your site in the future there will be distinct limitations. This makes choosing the right template crucial as you are going to have to get used to looking at it daily. Also, the pre-loaded features of the template will have to suffice, as you do not have the option of adding more interactive functions. Of course, it is possible to make adjustments to a template, however you may need to seek the help of a web designer if you are not experienced in this field.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that if you are running a business then the most important aspect you should focus on in regards to website design is customer satisfaction. After all, the website is their to please your customers, and to increase your sales. Your main goal when designing a business website is to show the customer you are a professional and reliable business. Sometimes the only way to do this is to invest in a custom design. However, this is not necessarily true for small business owners. The best advice to consider is to use your own discretion, and to experience with multiple solutions at once. This way you will not only learn more, but you may potentially reach more customers as well.

Important Benefits of e-Commerce Web Hosting
December 16, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Virtually every reliable and formidable company has their own website where they execute sales and transaction daily.  Each day countless individuals engage in activities such as banking, shopping, email communications, and entertainment.  The popularity of the world wide web has allowed business owner’s to boost their productivity and sales substantially. Entrepreneurs who do not yet own or run a business are also benefiting from having their own websites, and they are doing so with very little initial investment on their behalf. Ecommerce has also allowed many people to work from home, giving them a new freedom in life. If you are interested in selling products or services on your website then it would be wise to consider eCommerce hosting solutions. Here we will discuss the benefits of eCommerce hosting.

e-Commerce Hosting Tools

Ecommerce web hosting providers offer all the features needed to complete secure transactions online. Usually, your hosting account will come equipped with one or more registered domain names, as well multiple email accounts.  You’ll also have administrative abilities with these email accounts that will make managing business e-mail a lot more convenient. Another essential e-commerce feature is a shopping cart application , which will give your customers the ability to buy multiple items and cash out with ease. These shopping cart services also include PayPal integration and a merchant account for storing and tracking funds.  A good e-commerce hosting provider will also provide an SSL certificate that will encrypt all data sent through your website, thereby protecting the financial information of you and your customers.

Flexibility of e-Commerce Hosting Solutions

E-commerce solutions are also very flexibility with regards to the features of each plan. Regardless of the plan you choose, all e-commerce solution plans will include the minimum features needed to help your business run efficiently. However, most web hosting companies offer more than just the bare minimum for their e-commerce solutions, even giving you access to SEO tools that will boost your website’s traffic.

E-commerce Hosting Support Benefits

Most web hosting companies offer plans that meet both personal and business needs. Hosting companies know just how important customer service is to their customers. The customer service and support that a host offers can allow a business owner to see substantial gains in their productivity through an increased confidence and overall ability to improve their website. Since your website is open 24 hours a day, you should also make sure your prospective web host offers 24 hours customer support.

E-commerce Hosting Cost

The cost of a web hosting package depends entirely upon your needs, as well as the company you will be purchasing the hosting plan from. Some plans can be very expensive if you are in need of many tools and services, while other may only be a few dollars per month if you only require a basic e-commerce hosting account. Of course, even if you only need the minimum features, remember that you will always get what you pay for, and the cheapest plan is not necessarily going to be the best.  You should be more concerned with reliability than affordability, as this will affect your business in the long run. Most web hosting companies back their plans by money back guarantees, so you have nothing to lose by trying a more expensive plan.

Creating Backups In cPanel
December 15, 2009 at 1:55 pm

With all of the time and effort that is put forth into building a website, it would be foolish not to secure your efforts by creating a backup. Failing to backup your website could result in months or even years of work being lost overnight. There are a number of situations that could result in data loss for your website; your server’s hard drive can fail, your webhost can go out of business without warning, electrical problems can occur, and various other mishaps can take place. To prevent this from happening, users of cPanel can backup all of their website’s information quickly and easily with cPanel’s integrated backup utility. The entire backup process is automated, requiring only a few simple selections on your behalf, and cPanel users can even use the same backup utility to restore lost data.

Creating and Downloading a Full Backup

To create and download a full backup in cPanel, click Download or Generate a Full Web Site Backup in the cPanel Backup Utility Menu. Once the backup has been generated, you can select the file and save it to your computer by finding the recently created backup in the “Backups Available for Download” section. If needed, you can use this file at a later date to restore lost data within cPanel’s backup utility.

Creating Partial Backups

It is also possible to save certain pieces of your website, by clicking the appropriate links under the “Partial Backups” heading. Using his method will cause the backup file(s) to be downloaded to your computer in the directory of your choice.

Saving a Copy of Your Website to the Web Server

To save a copy of your website to the web server click  Download or Generate a Full Web Site Backup. Then select Home Directory from the “Backup Destination” heading. Next, type in your email address so that you can receive a notification email when the backup is ready. Finally, click Generate Backup.

Storing a Backup Remotely

While this feature is best done by advanced cPanel users, it is possible to log into a remote computer and store backup files through FTP/SCP. After you have entered all of the necessary information, the backup file can then be stored in the directory of your choice on a remote device. You will also receive a notification email at the email address of your choice, once the backup has been completed .

NOTE: When restoring a website using cPanel’s backup utility, you cannot use a full backup. Instead, the file must be downloaded and then decompressed before data restoration can occur. Only after the file has been decompressed will you then be able to upload and restore the individual segments of your website that are contained within the full backup.

A Secure Website Offers a Peace of Mind
December 14, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Whether you run a business website or a high trafficked blog, it is critically important to make sure your security system is as tight as possible.  When it comes to security, relaxed is something you cannot afford to be.  You need to take all the necessary measures to ensure that you stay ahead of the game.  If you just sit back and do nothing, then your risk of falling victim to a security breach soars.

Update Your Web Applications

Running older versions of programs such as Joomla or WordPress is like inviting hackers right into your website.  Software developers make updates of their products available to keep a jump on ambitious hackers.  In fact, there is currently a very nasty battle brewing between software companies and hackers.  Cyber criminals make it their business to compromise new applications as soon as they are released on the market.  Because this takes more time than they would like, the new versions of software are typically safe until updates or upgrades are made available.  Unfortunately, this usually means that the old versions are rendered vulnerable and therefore, insecure.  To put it simple – if you really value your customers and have their best interests at heart, you will only make use of the latest and most secure web applications.  If the word gets out that your website or blog is insecure, then you might not be able to recover from the blow inflicted to your reputation.

Secure Your Administrative Systems

Web applications are not all you need to be concerned about.  You also need to pay special attention to your administrative systems as well.  Whether it is the job of your system administrator or web hosting provider, it is ultimately up to you to ensure that security is up to par.  One of the most effective ways to keep your administrative systems secure is to apply strong passwords.  You would be surprised at just how fast hackers can guess a password.  This is especially true if you choose to use something that can be easily associated with your personal life.  You also have to consider that hackers have access to automated tools that greatly simplify the guessing process.  If your website stores sensitive information about your business or customers, then choosing a smart, secure password is a must.

Conclusion

If you run an online business, then there is a great chance that your website is your main source of income.  When this is the case, you need to make sure your customers’ information is secure as this is the best way to maintain integrity and loyalty among your audience.  Don’t take any chances with security.  By staying ahead of the game, both you and your audience can enjoy the peace of mind a solid security system offers.

Reasons For Using Multiple Domain Hosting
December 11, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Multiple domain hosting refers to a form of web hosting that allows you to control several domains on one hosting account. Hosting multiple domains on a single hosting account allows you to save time and money, because instead of paying for multiple hosting services, you can have all of your hosting needs met by one company. Multiple domain hosting is also seen as a highly convenient option, as you can administer the services and features of each domain within one centralized control panel.

The Advantages of Multiple Domain Hosting

There are many benefits involved with using multiple domain hosting. The most notable advantage is that multiple domain hosting allows you to expand your web presence, thereby increasing your visibility allowing you to reach more clients with ease. With control over multiple domains, you have the ability to stretch your investments into multiple niches, thereby diversifying your income through various revenue streams.  When used in conjunction with the ever-expanding online arsenal of website applications and plugins, multiple domain hosting gives you the ultimate ability to express yourself, or your business, by creating blogs, photo galleries, forums, and even support sites. The sky is the limit with multiple domain hosting, as you are no longer restricted by the confines of a single web site. Multiple domain hosting captures the essence of what it means to be entrepreneurial.

The Value of Multiple Domain Hosting

Due to the large and varied number of companies offering multiple domain hosting, it is now very easy to find affordable deals on multiple domain hosting. In fact, even though you have control over multiple domains in one control panel, the prices are in the same area as other hosting packages. There may be a little extra cost involved, but it is well worth it to be able to expand your online business with multiple web sites. Keep in mind that choosing a reliable hosting company will ensure that your investment is worth every penny, even if it costs you a bit more than using a “cheaper” web hosting service. The old saying “you get what you pay for” is still valid, especially in the world of online business.

The Ease of Multiple Domain Hosting

While multiple domain hosting may cost a few extra dollars more per month, the domain names themselves are extremely easy to acquire, and they are also highly affordable. You can buy a $5 domain from a site like Godaddy, and then use this new domain with your multiple domain hosting package by pointing your site to your hosting provider’s servers. This is a very simple process that can be done with the help of the hosting company within your website’s control panel interface. After you’ve made the necessary changes and your new domains are active, you can log into your multiple domain hosting account and manage them as you see fit. Most web hosts will also offer the features needed to set up additional services such as FTP accounts, email accounts, subdirectories and databases for each individual domain.

Does Your Host Support You?
December 10, 2009 at 1:50 pm

If you want to have your very own website, rest assured that there are many web hosting providers around to fulfill that desire.  However, there is much that needs to be  considered in order to find the provider that is truly appropriate for your needs.  One of the most important of all is the level of support the company provides with the service.

Before signing up for any web hosting plan, it is advisable to find out just how competent the support staff is and how fast they will be able to respond to your questions or concerns.  It may also be a good ideal to find a company that provides different methods of support to ensure that you are covered from all angles.

Common and Advanced Support Options

In today’s web hosting market, support is provided in several ways.  Most companies make online documentation available in the form of knowledge bases, FAQs and tutorials.  These support options are great for customers who want to find their own answers as they generally contain information related to the service.  A well designed support system will make it fast and easy to find out how to set up email accounts, create databases, add on domains, implement your site builder, and much more.  While very convenient, online documentation should not be the only form of support the hosting company provides.  You also need the benefit of advanced support options, including the following:

Email – When signing up for a hosting package, email support should be a given.  No exceptions.  Even companies that have limited support options usually offer email support 24/7.  Because email can never assure you the speediest response, you may want to look for other methods to obtain the support you need.

Support Tickets - Ticket systems have become a common way to provide support on the web hosting market.  You simply fill out a ticket expressing your questions or concerns, submit it to the support department, and then wait for a response.  Support tickets offer the power of convenience and make a great alternative to email.

Live Chat – This is another feature that has become very popular in the on-demand world of internet computing.  Live chat allows you to get support in near real-time.  No waiting for a response via email or from the ticket system, both of which can be slower than you would prefer.  Although live chat is a matter of preference, this support option can turn out to be useful when yo need to communicate with a real person.

Toll-free Phone – The support feature many consider a must have is toll-free phone.  All the above options are great, but nothing beats the old fashion method of being able to get a live employee on the phone.  It would be nice if you could find a host company that at least keeps its technical support line open around the clock as problems could occur at any time.

Finding a good web hosting provider is never as easy as it sounds.  However, due diligence is required to find the solution that is best fit for your needs.  Therefore, you should access the company’s level of support as much as you can to better determine if it will live up to expectations.

Delve Into The World of .NET Framework
December 10, 2009 at 1:46 pm

Created by Microsoft, the .NET Framework is a programming environment that allows for the seamless development of web applications.  These applications leverage open standards such as XML, HTTP, and SOAP to interact with other applications and serve content through client machines.  The .NET Framework is both platform and language independent, which basically means that it is compatible with a wide range of programming languages and operating systems.   Some of the languages it supports are VBScript, VB.NET, C#, Jscript and C++.  The framework is also capable of running applications on Windows, Unix, Linux, and Mac OS X platforms.  Its flexibility enables programmers to develop applications, faster and easier than most other frameworks.

Features and Components

The .NET Framework’s ability to support such a wide range of programming languages is made possible by the CRL (Common Language Runtime) engine.  Rather than compiling applications in native code, CLR compiles them in MSIL (Microsoft Intermediate Language), which then converts it into code.  CLR is also responsible for a number of runtime services, including memory processing, thread management, language integration, and security enforcement.  Most notably, it drastically reduces the time required to write a program through useful features such as cross language exception handling, life cycle management, and dynamic binding for converting  reusable components.  As you can see, the .NET Framework provides an extensive infrastructure for creating web applications.

Web settings and caching are two more important features of the .NET Framework.  Web settings enable the configuration of applications to be handled through web.config.  Since web.config is an XML file, it is highly customizable and easy to understand.  When a web.config is altered in any way, the changes are detected instantly, allowing for the fast configuration of .NET applications.  Caching is also advantageous because it collects frequently accessed data into memory so it can be retrieved faster.  The .NET Framework offers three forms of caching: output caching, data caching, and fragment caching, each which improve application performance in their own unique way.

.NET Advantages

There are many advantages to using the .NET Framework for application development.  It requires fewer lines of code to be written, enables optimal compilation, and an easy deployment.  Because the framework allows the use of web controls, developers can spend more of their time focusing on implementing application design and features instead of writing code.  Another important aspect is that everything, including web controls and blocks of server-side code are compiled on the fly when a page is requested.  .NET Framework applications can be compiled on a developer’s machine and then seamlessly uploaded with all pages to a web server.  This is unlike applications built in ASP, which requires that pages and their components be registered with the operating system.

Summary

The .NET Framework enables platform independence, network transparency, and rapid application development.  Microsoft remarks that the framework will continue to be its main solution for desktop and server development for years to come.  .NET applications aim to help business integrate their systems more efficiently while allowing them to reap the benefits of accessing the information that need at anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

How Much Should You Pay for Website Security?
December 9, 2009 at 3:16 pm

The issue of security has come to the forefront as the attack on computer systems continues to increase.  In March of 2009, a group of hackers showed that sensitive customer data could be compromised without the affected company even realizing it.  The Telegraph, a UK-based newspaper, was the victim of a hacking attack and did not find out until the attackers posted screen shots and other confidential information online as proof of their success.  It was later reported that the Telegraph was using an outdated security system that made the hackers’ job far too easy.

If a hacker is able to get a hold of credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, customer data, or other sensitive details, it won’t take long for the business to start suffering and losing customers when their audience no longer trusts them with their information.  So how does one stay ahead of sophisticated web criminals, and how much will it cost you?  While there is no exact figure, the cost of doing nothing is probably much more than you can afford.

Do Nothing and You’ll Pay

You will pay severely if you do not take measures to secure your website.  A single hacking attack can ruin your life whether you run a small business or a large corporation.  Deciding on what to pay for a reliable security system depends on a range of factors, but mainly on the type of business itself.  For example, if you run a business in the financial sector, you would more than likely require a state of the art security system, in addition to hardened operating systems, web servers and applications.  Routine penetration tests and security assessment should also be a priority.  As we speak, hackers are coming up with new ways to bypass virus scanners, firewalls and network security mechanisms to penetrate websites and thieve important information that does not belong to them.  It is critical to remember that implementing a security system without regular updates and assessments is equal to doing nothing at all, a painful lesson Telegraph was forced to learn.

Minimizing the Risks

One of the main reasons security assessment must be regularly performed is because it can help to mitigate serious risks.  The applications, code, and the infrastructure itself must be reviewed on a routine basis to check for new vulnerabilities.  If not, your website and the sensitive data it contains could be susceptible to SQL injection, cross-site scripting, URL manipulation and host of other exploits.

When trying to determine how much you should spend on a security system, keep the following factors in mind:

Regulatory compliance

Industry standards

History of security breaches

Size of network and system

Impact of potential losses in the event of a successful breach

Conclusion

Building an efficient security system can turn out to be very expensive.  However, no business can afford to do nothing.  Therefore, the cost of a security system should be estimated at a rate that gives your business the assurance that it can provide customers with the access they need while keeping the criminals out.
