Is Niche Hosting Right for You?
November 24, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Aside from web hosting companies that offer common services such as shared hosting, dedicated and managed hosting, there are also a number of hosts that provide niche services.  A niche web hosting service is one geared toward a distinct or small group of customers.  For example, one set of customers might have unique requirements for email, while others might require a certain type of database.  Therefore, the niche service is usually modeled around these needs.

Types of Niche Hosting

The market for niche web hosting is huge and seems to get bigger every year.  Some of the services you will find in this burgeoning market include:

Blog Hosting – Blogs are a big hit on the web, providing website owners with a simple and efficient way to publish content online.  Most blog hosting solutions are centered around a particular blogging platform.  Some of the most common are WordPress, b2evolution and Nucleus.

CMS Hosting - CMS (content management system) software is quickly replacing HTML editors and traditional site builders.  This type of software allows you to create and manage websites of various sizes, ideal for blogs, online communities and even e-commerce applications.  CMS hosting packages are typically modeled around specific platforms such as Joomla or Drupal.

Email Hosting - An email hosting service often targets businesses that want to manage email on a server other than the one hosting their website.  One of the most popular offerings in this segment is hosted Microsoft Exchange.

Image Hosting - This type of service has become extremely popular over the last few years.  Image hosting is geared towards users who simply need web space to display and share files, or want to incorporate high quality images into their website.

Video Hosting - These services are designed for individuals who want to host video content online.  Video hosting powers many of today’s video sharing websites and communities.

How Much Will You Pay?

Niche hosting services are usually in the same ballpark as traditional web hosting.  However, some companies actually charge more.  This is mainly because they are targeting a smaller group of customers or do not have the resources of larger hosting firms.  For this reason, you may want to consider a traditional service over one that is niche orientated.  You may be able to get a better value out of a solution that bundles common, but useful features beside the video hosting functions you need.  However, you should keep in mind that a niche host may be able to provide specialized tools and features a typical host cannot.

Deciding whether to go with a niche or general web hosting service is all a matter of preference.  The exception would be a niche service that can provide special features, which email, image and video hosting tend to do.  Perhaps the best option would be to consider the price of the service against the benefits it has to offer.  If the provider offers something you cannot find in a traditional web hosting package, the niche variety could be right for you.
